A commanding performance across the field from the Brumby Runners guided the team to a 54-21 win over the Junior Waratahs at Canberra Stadium on Saturday Night.
The Runners scored eight tries to three in a match that is sure to impress the CA Technologies Brumbies coaches. Fullback Jesse Mogg and half-back Nick White both outstanding performers in a team that clicked into gear from the time they took the field.
Early dominance from the Brumby Runners was rewarded with a third minute try to flyhalf Rod Iona. The crafty playmaker working some magic to register first points to the right of the posts with White collecting the extras.
It wasn’t long before the Junior Waratahs had their opportunity with a mixture of soft-midfield defence and strong running from inside centre Apo Latunipulu leading to a try next to the posts in the eighth minute.
The next positive passage of play came from Brumby Runners second-rower Sam Carter, who was again outstanding for the ACT based team. His work on the flanks led to a try out wide to No 8 Tom Boidin.
After good lead up work from Runners fullback Jesse Mogg, Iona put his winger Pamu Fou over in the corner with a lovely cross field kick.
The Waratahs backs look pedestrian in the first half as fly-half Daniel Halangahu had a couple of touches he would rather forget, including a school boy error when he failed to find touch from a penalty when the Junior Waratahs were on the attack.
Following an excellent first half were he looked dangerous with every touch, Runners fullback Mogg used his speed and evasiveness to score a spectacular solo try from half way in the 43rd minute.
Further tries in the second half to Sam Carter (two), Cadeyrn Neville, Tim Metcher and Clint Sills sealed the win for the Runners, in what was the best performance of the 2011 season.
The match was the last in charge for Coach Darren Coleman, who has taken a coaching opportunity in Japan and will leave next week.
