CA Brumbies return to training paddock

The CA Brumbies have returned to training ahead of the start of the 2008 Investec Super 14 season.

The CA Brumbies resumed their pre-season training with a weights and field session this morning after a short break over the Christmas period.

CA Brumbies Head Coach Laurie Fisher says he’s been pleased with the approach his players have taken towards the pre-season training block.

“The players have all made steady physical gains during the first half of the pre-season,” he said. “They’ve [the players] stuck to their training programs over the break and have returned in good nick. We’ll continue to build on that until the beginning of the season but our training from now on in will have a greater football focus.

“Everyone’s keen to get stuck into playing football; our challenge is to maintain that enthusiasm and continue that development into the Super 14 season.”

Included in the returning squad were the CA Brumbies new recruits Peter Betham, Mitchell Chapman, Huia Edmonds, Josh Holmes, Tyrone Smith and Matt Toomua.

Fisher says he’s pleased with the make-up of the CA Brumbies’ 31-man squad for the 2008 season.

“We’re very pleased with the balance of the squad and confident that they can get the job done for us,” he said. “There’s still a lot of Wallaby experience with guys like George Smith, Mark Gerrard and Mark Chisholm and there’s a solid core of players who’ve played 50 or more Super Rugby matches.

“There are also a large number of players like Julian Huxley, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Mitch Chapman and Adam Wallace Harrison who can and have played in multiple positions which gives us tremendous versatility within the squad.”

CA Brumbies captain Stirling Mortlock was the only face missing from the training session as he continues to rehabilitate his shoulder following off-season surgery. He will rejoin the squad in February.

The CA Brumbies will play trial matches against the Waratahs in Gosford (1 February) and the Hurricanes in Levin (8 February) before taking on the Crusaders in Christchurch for their first Investec Super 14 match on 15 February.
