Joe Tomane will remain a Brumby until the end of 2016 after re-signing with the ARU and the University of Canberra Brumbies on Thursday.
Two more years in Canberra will take Tomane’s time with the club through to five seasons, with the winger almost certain to rack up 50 caps at some point in 2015. Ruled out six weeks ago through a fractured eye socket and cheek bone, Tomane will have a chance to add to his 38 caps when the Western Force comes to Canberra in just over a fortnight.
After starting his career as a rugby league player with the Storm and Titans, Tomane made the transition to rugby union in 2012 and has since become a regular fixture at Provincial level with the UC Brumbies and International rugby with the Wallabies.
Tomane said it was always his first choice to stay with the UC Brumbies.
“I want to make it clear that I always wanted to stay in Canberra playing with the Brumbies. I gave my management clear instructions at the start that the Brumbies was the only team I wanted to play for and I’m pleased that the club has been able to include me in its plans for the future,” Tomane said.
“Working under Stephen Larkham has been a highlight for me at this point in my career. I know that I’m able to push my limits and improve my game with Bernie as my coach.
“I feel like this is the best place for me to become a better player and to reach my full potential. I’m a big believer in loyalty and it’s nice to be able to repay the faith the club has shown in me over the last three or four years.”
Since arriving in Canberra, Tomane has established one of the competition’s best back three combining with the likes of Jesse Mogg, Henry Speight, Robbie Coleman, Clyde Rathbone and Pat McCabe.
An amazing finisher, Tomane’s acrobatics close to the line have made him a crowd favourite in Canberra and as one of the Wallabies go-to men during the British and Irish Lions series in 2013. Having made his Test debut against Scotland in 2012, Tomane has gone on to play nine Tests for the Wallabies including the 2013 Spring Tour.
