Six-try romp runs Rebels ragged

Six tries have ushered the UC Brumbies back into the winners circle at GIO Stadium on Saturday night as they dominated the Rebels, 37-10.

The UC Brumbies looked classy from the outset, with the first half a brilliant display of running rugby which resulted in points and line-breaks from right across the park.

Man of the Match Nic White was outstanding, as was his Wallabies team mate Matt Toomua, as their national coach, Ewen McKenzie watched from the stands.

A first-half bonus point including a double to Toomua saw the home side holding court, with White, Ben Mowen and Pat McCabe all turning it on.

Both Toomua’s tries came from White passes – the first from close to the line while the second took a long range mission from near half way.

Lealiifano had a tough session off the boot, but it didn’t provide the scoreboard attendants any more down time as the UC Brumbies laid on quality tries to Pat McCabe, Scott Sio.

Director of Rugby Laurie Fisher said the side showed plenty of ability in putting the Rebels away.

“We had a good focussed training week and got our heads around where we need to be defencively,” Fisher said.

“There have been some lessons over the last couple of weeks about preparing for the game we want to play rather than preparing for the way the other team will play.

“It’s about momentum and confidence. We’ll take a lot of confidence out of that game, that the team and style of play we’ve worked hard to develop over the last three years is providing us with good results like we saw tonight.”

Heading to the sheds 25-3, the UC Brumbies looked in complete control as they moved the ball fluently across the park and found gaps through their backs.

More points followed after half time when Sam Carter rolled over the line from close range, pushing the score out to 32-3 with half an hour to play.

The Rebels had nothing to lose and started to play with belief the final 15 minutes, crossing the line on three occasions but only being rewarded once to Captain Scott Higginbotham.

But it wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the game, the UC Brumbies scoring their sixth try on the bell thanks to Leon Power to make it 37-10.
