The best of the ACT’s premier competition will face off against the Australian Champions on Saturday in Canberra, when the ACT XV faces the UC Brumbies in the Super Rugby squad’s final trial of 2014.
Now an annual feature of the UC Brumbies calendar, the fixture allows Canberra’s club stars an opportunity to impress top-squad coaches and players in front of a vocal home crowd, treated to free entry.
A number of last week’s UC Brumbies who travelled to Queenstown to face the Highlanders are now looking likely to change strips, with Tom Staniforth, Matt Hawke, Tim Cree, Rod Iona and Michael Smith all likely to be available for the ACT XV side.
ACT XV Head Coach Craig Robberds said the annual fixture provided club players with a big chance to impress coaches of the top squad.
“I don’t think the opportunity of this match is lost on any of our players and I’m sure they will all be looking to have a crack at the full timers,” Robberds said.
“There are plenty of fulltime Wallabies to choose from at the Brumbies so for our guys it’s a chance to test themselves against the world’s best. Those opportunities don’t come around every day.
“With free entry it’s a great way for the ACT community to welcome in the new year of rugby and I’d encourage all footy fans from around the Territory to come along and enjoy the game.”
The ACT XV will name its team on Wednesday with the UC Brumbies set to announce a squad on Thursday morning.
With gates open at 6pm for a 6.50pm kick-off, families are encouraged to come along and take advantage of the family friendly atmosphere on offer at Viking Park.
