UC Brumbies pathways take shape

The UC Brumbies pathways will take a new and exciting direction in 2014 with lofty ambitions set towards the Under 20’s, Schoolboys, 17’s and 15’s national tournaments.

With competition set to kick off for the Under 20’s and Junior Gold Cup squads over the next two months, UC Brumbies coaching staff have been busy preparing the teams for Australia’s biggest aged-grade rugby carnivals.

While the 18’s squad, which will focus on schoolboy representation in July, have been training one day per week, the other three squads are now assembling three times a week.

This has involved input from UC Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham, Director of Rugby Laurie Fisher, Defence Coach Dan McKellar, Strength and Conditioning Coaches Damien Marsh and Darren Clunn and Coaching and Pathways Manager, Russell Ingram.

The players are being coached and critiqued on elite elements like culture, style of play, technique and strength and conditioning.

“It’s an exciting time to be a junior in the ACT competition. The pathways we are developing with the UC Brumbies are aiming to get more selections in aged grade national sides and better results at national carnivals,” Ingram said.

“We have one of the richest junior rugby set ups in Australia to draw from and it’s really important for the Brumbies, for our junior players and Australian rugby in general that we are working to make the most of that talent pool.

“The input we have been receiving from the Brumbies coaching staff has improved the way we train our athletes and I’m looking forward to seeing the hard work translate into results and higher selections for aged-grade rugby players in the ACT. This is something we want to see develop further over the next few years.”

The UC Brumbies held an induction evening two Mondays ago which was attended by more than 150 people, including players, parents and local coaches.

At the Under 20’s trial players travelled from as far as Centre Queensland – an encouraging sign for Ingram and the rest of his team as they push towards the various national carnivals in 2014.
